Bitdefender has topped independent antivirus lab tests for years running. That’s not marketing — AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, the two most respected testing organisations in the industry, consistently rank it at or near the top for both detection rates and system performance impact.
But lab tests aren’t everything. Here’s how it performs in real-world use.
What you get with Total Security
Bitdefender comes in several tiers. Total Security is the flagship, covering up to 5 devices across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It includes:
- Real-time malware and ransomware protection
- Web protection (blocks malicious URLs before they load)
- Anti-phishing and anti-fraud filters
- VPN (200MB/day on Total Security; unlimited with Premium Security)
- Password manager (basic — a standalone option is still better)
- Parental controls
- Webcam and microphone protection
- Vulnerability scanner (flags unpatched software)
- System optimisation tools
The multi-device coverage is genuinely useful if you’re protecting a household. One subscription, managed from a single dashboard.
Detection rates
In the most recent AV-TEST evaluation, Bitdefender detected 100% of widespread malware and 100% of zero-day threats in the test period — matching the best scores in the industry. It’s been at 99–100% consistently for several years.
For context, Windows Defender typically scores 99–100% as well on widespread malware, but occasionally dips lower on zero-day detections. The gap between Defender and Bitdefender in raw detection is narrow — but Bitdefender’s additional layers (web filtering, behavioural detection, anti-exploit) add meaningful depth.
System performance
This is where Bitdefender genuinely differentiates itself from older competitors. In AV-TEST performance scores, it consistently scores above average for impact on system speed — meaning it slows things down less than most.
In daily use on a mid-range laptop: no noticeable slowdown during browsing or productivity work. A full system scan takes around 15–20 minutes and does push CPU usage up, but scheduled scans are set to run when the machine is idle by default.
Compare that to older products like McAfee or Norton, which were notorious for dragging systems to a crawl. Bitdefender’s engine is genuinely well-optimised.
The VPN situation
Total Security includes a VPN capped at 200MB per day — enough to occasionally check email on a coffee shop network, not enough for streaming or regular use. If you want the VPN for regular use, you’d need to upgrade to Premium Security, which adds cost.
For a proper always-on VPN, a dedicated product like NordVPN is better value. Treat the bundled VPN as a bonus for emergencies, not a feature to rely on.
Password manager
There’s a basic password manager included. It works, but it lacks the polish and cross-device sync of dedicated tools like 1Password or Bitwarden. If you’re already using a proper password manager, ignore this feature. If you’re not using one at all, it’s a starting point.
What we liked
- Consistently best-in-class detection rates
- Noticeably lighter on resources than competitors
- Multi-platform: one subscription covers Windows, Mac, Android, iOS
- Webcam/microphone protection is a nice extra
- Clean interface — not cluttered with unnecessary upsells
- Autopilot mode makes sensible decisions without prompting you constantly
What could be better
- VPN data cap is too small to be genuinely useful on Total Security
- Password manager is basic — standalone tools do it better
- Renewal pricing jumps after the first year (first year discounts are steep — year two is close to full price)
- Some features (like the optimisation tools) feel like filler
Pricing
Bitdefender runs aggressive first-year discounts, often 50–70% off. Expect to pay around £25–35 for the first year on Total Security for 5 devices. The renewal price is higher — worth keeping an eye on and potentially cancelling and re-subscribing annually if the discount isn’t offered.
How it compares
| Bitdefender Total Security | Windows Defender | Norton 360 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detection rate | ★★★★★ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ |
| System performance | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ |
| VPN included | Limited (200MB/day) | No | Yes (unlimited) |
| Multi-platform | Yes (5 devices) | Windows only | Yes |
| Price/year | ~£25–35 (yr 1) | Free | ~£40–50 |
Norton 360 matches Bitdefender on detection and includes an unlimited VPN, but it’s heavier on resources and more expensive. If VPN is a priority, Norton is worth considering. If you want the lightest, most technically capable product, Bitdefender wins.
Verdict
Bitdefender Total Security is the best all-round paid antivirus available. It tops the independent lab tests, runs efficiently, covers all your devices, and doesn’t drown you in nag screens.
The main caveat is that for most careful home users, Windows Defender is already adequate. Bitdefender makes most sense if you want multi-platform coverage, have children using devices, or want the extra behavioural protection layers for higher-risk use.
Our rating: 5/5 — The best paid option if you’re going to buy antivirus at all.
Best-in-class detection, lightest performance impact, covers up to 5 devices across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS.
